Norman
R. Himmelman
84, of Pentz, passed away February 26, 2001 in the QE11 Health Sciences
Center (V.G. Site), Halifax. Born in Rose Bay, he was the son of the
late John and Nora (Mossman) Himmelman. Norm’s career on the sea
began in 1928 fishing from George’s Bank to the Grand Banks. At
an age of 21, he joined the Marine Division of the RCMP. With the outbreak
of WW11, he was one of 46 chosen from the ranks of the Nova Scotia Division
of the RCMP to serve his country. From 1939 to 1945 he saw continuous
action with the RAF Air Sea Rescue on the English Channel. Norm retired
from the RCMP Marine Division as a staff Sargent after 30 years of distinguished
service. During this time he had under his command and served on such
ships as the Shaunovon, the Wood, the Irving, and the Blue Heron. After
retirement from the RCMP, he joined the Atlantic Pilotage Authority
in Halifax where he served for 10 Years and then went on to enjoy several
years as captain of the LaHave Ferry. An avid outdoorsman, Norm greatly
enjoyed many sports. Among them, hunting, fishing, ice sailing, and
especially loved his game of golf. Full of fun he was always ready to
share a story and a joke. He was a member of the RCMP Veteran Association,
Bridgewater Golf and County Club, and the Osprey Ridge Golf Club. A
wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and special friend to many,
He will be deeply missed. He is survived by his wife, the former Lucinne
(Byers), a son Mike (Patty) and grandson Chris, all of Halifax. He was
predeceased by brothers William, Lemuel; sisters Mamie, Vera, and Nina.
There will be no visitation at the funeral home by request. A memorial
service will be held 11 a.m. Friday in Sweeny’s Funeral Chapel,
Bridgewater, with Rev. Robert Zinck officiating. Interment to follow
in Fort Point Cemetery, LaHave. In lieu of flowers, memorials donations
may be made to the QE11 Health Sciences Center Foundation, 1278 Tower
Road, Halifax, NS B3H 9Z9, or to the charity of choice.
