William (Bill) Fairweather Kydd

88, of Bridgewater, N.S., passed away on August 26, 2002. Born in Portland, Oregon, Bill was the son of the late Donald and Penelope (Hewson) Kydd. He moved to Canada as an infant and lived on the Prairies until 1927, when he and his family moved to Truro, N.S. There, Bill completed his education at Colchester County Academy. He joined the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce in 1934, working in branches throughout the Maritime Provinces. Bill was a veteran of the Second World War, enlisting with the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corp in May of 1940. As Staff Sergeant with the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division Ordnance Sub-Park, he served in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany and was Mentioned in Dispatches in recognition of Gallant and Distinguished Services. Bill was discharged from active service in October, 1945 and returned to the bank, where he was manager of various branches in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia until 1960, when he became Assistant Manager of Simmon's Motors until he retired in 1980. Bill generously devoted much of his time to community service. He served as Town Councillor for three terms, was Deputy Mayor for part of this time and was a member of the committee of Town Councillors which worked to bring Michelin to Bridgewater. He served 13 years as a Board Member of Dawson Memorial Hospital, was a member of the School Board and was a Founding Board Member of Hillside Pines Home for Special Care. He was a Life Member and Honourary Treasurer of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch Number 24, Bridgewater, where he served as President, Treasurer, Chairman of the Poppy Campaign and as a member of several committees. In 1996, Bill was awarded the Palm Leaf to the Meritorious Service Medal. He was first Chairman of the local Red Cross Campaign, a past Chairman of the local Cancer Society, past member of the Kiwanis Club and was for a number of years associated with the NIOBE Sea Cadets. Bill was Past President of the Bridgewater Curling Club, Past Treasurer of the LaHave River Yacht Club, where he enjoyed sailing and a member of the Bridgewater Golf Club. Bill also enjoyed travelling, gardening and woodworking. He loved life and lived it to the fullest, but most of all he enjoyed time with his family and friends. Bill was dear husband of 58 years to wife, Peggy (Quelch), kind and loving father to Allan (Sandra), Riverview, N.B., Susan Kydd-Haynes (Martin), Moncton. N.B., Richard (Pamela), Bridgewater, N.S., doting Grampie and Papa to Kendra (Scott) Shrubb and Christopher Kydd, Carol, Cheryl and Brenda Haynes, Jeffrey and Peter Kydd and wonderful friend to many. Also surviving are sister Dorothy Dickie, Ontario, sister-in-law, Cecile Kydd of Halifax, N.S., several nieces and nephews. Bill was predeceased by his sister Mary Bailey and a brother, Hewson. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Sweeny's Funeral Home, Phoenix St., Bridgewater. Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, August 29 at the funeral home. Royal Canadian Legion Branch 24 will hold a public legion tribute at 6:30pm Thursday in the funeral home. A service celebrating Bill's life will be held at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Bridgewater, at 11am Friday with Rev. Robert Coote officiating. Private interment will be in the Brookside Cemetery, Bridgewater. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson's Foundation of Canada or to Hillside Pines Home for Special Care in Bridgewater.
