Luella
Beatrice (Wentzel) Chase
82,
Of Barss Corner, Lunenburg County died suddenly at home on September
30, 2005. Born January 20, 1923 in Maplewood, NS, she was the daughter
of the late Everett and Hannah (Banks) Wentzel. She was a member of
the Barss Corner Baptist Church, where she was a long-time member of
the church choir which she had to reluctantly resign from due to throat
problems resulting from Wegener’s disease. She was also a Life
Member of the Barss Corner Baptist Ladies Auxiliary and enjoyed the
fellowship, fund-raising, and social activities associated with this.
She was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 102 Ladies Auxiliary
New Germany. She joined the Rebecca Lodge in Parkdale Maplewood in 1947
serving in many offices both locally and regionally. Over the years,
she canvassed in her community for many charitable organizations - Canadian
Red Cross, Arthritis Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation, to name a
few. She gathered many sponsors for the Rock-a-thons she participated
in. Luella enjoyed reading and researching, gathering knowledge from
medical books and literature. She corresponded with folks far and near,
and in later years in the Wegener’s Support Group. Luella began
her working years at a restaurant in Middleton, then Graves and other
businesses in the valley. Later on she worked as a Census interviewer.
Besides her dedication in raising of her family, she enjoyed such hobbies
as quilting, embroidery, and hairpin lace, the latter of which she demonstrated
at various Arts and Crafts Fairs and Festivals. She had a great love
of music and enjoyed listening to music, singing, writing songs, playing
the guitar and pump organ. Luella was an avid researcher into her genealogy
which she continued to delve into right until the end. She always enjoyed
playing cards and in later years became known as one of three ladies
in her community called the Golden Girls who socialized together. Luella
enjoyed going for drives and visiting her many friends and family. She
