Kendall
James Kenney, Q.C.
83, Halifax, formerly from Bridgewater, passed away Thursday,
June 9, 2005. Born in New Germany April 1, 1922, he was the son of the
late Wilfred and Ruth Kenney. Due to an illness at 14 years, Kendall
studied and graduated high school at home in New Germany and entered
Pre-Law at Acadia University in 1942. He graduated from Dalhousie Law
School in 1947 and articled with Burchell-Smith in Halifax and G.H.
Crouse in Bridgewater. Kendall
was a faithful servant of the Lord. He was a member of the Bridgewater
United Baptist Church where he met and married his wife Evelyn. He served
as a Deacon for 12 years, as a teacher, as a member of the choir, Treasurer
of the Endowment Fund and more recently as the Chairman of United Baptist
Church of Bridgewater Foundation along with many other committees of
the church. He has also served in many offices of the Atlantic United
Baptist Convention including the convention parliamentarian. Kendall
loved the Law. In 1949, he set up private practice in Bridgewater, taking
over the practice of Arthur Thurlow. In 1970, Kendall began taking on
partners and articling clerks to his firm until he retired in 1994.
Kendall served as a town councilor for 5 years, town solicitor for 27
years, was a member of the Nova Scotia Bar Society, past president of
the Western Nova Scotia Bar Society and member of the Lunenburg County
Bar Society. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1960’s.
He served on the Board of Governors of Acadia University and various
Board committees. Kendall was a faithful friend and servant of his community.
He served South Shore Regional Hospital first as board member for 12
years and then as solicitor for 25 years. He served on the Children's
Aid Society, Bridgewater School Board, the Bridgewater Board of Trade
and the Bridgewater Downtown Business Association. During the Diefenbaker-Pearson
years, Kendall served as returning officer for Lunenburg-Queens. Kendall
loved music. He was an accomplished musician, playing the violin and
the piano since he was a child. He was also a tenor in the South Shore
Chorale and played violin with the South Shore Concert Orchestra. He
was a member of the local Community Concert Association. He is survived
by his son James (Linda); daughter, Anne; grandchildren, Heather and
Karl; niece, Sharon and nephews, Wayne, David and Gregory and by many
good friends and neighbours. He was predeceased by his wife Evelyn Marjorie
(Harrison) and brothers, Carlyle and Stuart. Kendall was loved and well
respected by his family, friends and colleagues. Visitation will be
held on Saturday June 11, 2005 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm at Sweeney's Funeral
Home, Bridgewater. A celebration of Kendall’s life will be held
at Bridgewater United Baptist Church at 2pm on Sunday, June 12, 2005.
Family burial will be at Brookside Cemetery. Family flowers only. Donations
in memory of Kendall may be made to the Bridgewater United Baptist Church
Building Fund, Acadia Divinity College or charity of your choice. Online
