Charles Johansen

88, of West LaHave, Lunenburg County, passed away peacefully at his home on November 17, 2006. He was born in a lighthouse on an island off the north coast of Norway in 1918. He served as a Gunnery Officer in the Norwegian Navy during the Second World War. After surviving the sinking of two ships by torpedo on the crossing to Canada, he was stationed at Camp Norway in Lunenburg and at Travers Island in New York. He joined the CNR and retired as a Conductor in 1979, and also worked as a commercial fisherman. He was a Woods Guide and a member of the Rod and Gun Club. He was a charter member of the LaHave River Yacht Club. He was a former member of the Pleasantville Fire Department. For many years he was president of the Pleasantville Cemetery Association. He was active in the congregation of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Conquerall Bank. He was a member of Branch 24 Royal Canadian Legion in Bridgewater and in recent years a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 23 in Lunenburg. He is survived by daughters, Heidi (Rick) Hamburg and Jacki (Jim) Harvey, both of West LaHave; Andrea Davenport (Kevin Hebb), Western Shore; grandchildren, Jeremy, Jessica Hamburg; Jay, Corey Martin; Rebecca, Erica Davenport; great granddaughter Eve Hamburg; sister, Edna and brother, Harry, both in Norway; a sister, Solveig, in Germany. Charles was predeceased by his wife, June Elizabeth (Grimm) and his son, Charles William, both of West LaHave; his mother, Elfreda, his father Peder and his brother Morton in Norway. A memorial service will be held 2pm Wednesday in Sweeny’s Funeral Chapel, Bridgewater, Royal Canadian Legion, Luneburg Branch No. 23 Chaplain Rev, Ken Wild officiating. Private family burial will be in the Pleasantville Cemetery. Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Redeemer Lutheran Church.
