In Memory
Allan Bruce Renner
On
Monday, February 25, 2008, at the age of 68, Allan “Bruce”
Renner, surrounded with the love of family and friends, opened his wings
and peacefully returned home to God. Born in Halifax August 29, 1939,
to the late Edgar “Allan” and Helen (O’Neill) Renner,
Bruce was an adventurous and rebellious lad. He spent much of his time
at St. Mary’s Boat Club paddling, boating and diving and later
took pleasure in fast cars, motorcycles and Kingfisher CB Radio Club
rallies. Totally at home on or in the water, he was a certified scuba
instructor, passionate about diving. Bruce enjoyed a rewarding career
in the newspaper industry beginning with a pressman apprenticeship in
the late ‘50s at the Halifax Herald. In 1963 he moved on to The
Dartmouth Free Press as Production Superintendent, moving up to Plant
Manager. In 1980 he took a position in Bridgewater to manage Lunenburg
County Press (now Lighthouse Publishing Limited). Eventually this provided
the opportunity to serve on the board of directors in both the Canadian
and Atlantic Newspapers Associations including President of ACNA. He
also took great pleasure in teaching at Kings College School of Journalism
as well as participating in the local bowling and curling leagues. Bruce
was a man of service, gratified by his involvement in the community.
Some of the organizations he participated in were Air Canada’s
Heart of Gold Award Program; Kiwanis International, serving as Lieutenant
Governor; Kiwanis Club of Bluenose Golden K; WAYS (We Appreciate Your
Service) Award; and Junior Achievement. He was also a Christopher Course
Instructor, a founding member of Osprey Ridge Golf Club and a recognized
blood donor. After his retirement, Bruce found pleasure on the golf
course and continued his fascination of building, fixing and manufacturing
things. Anyone fortunate enough to sit at a card table with him knows
he was a sharp and competitive player. An intense and involved bridge
player, he took pride in well-earned wins. He also served as President
of the Bridgewater Duplicate Bridge Club. Some of his best times over
the years were spent with his family and friends relaxing and playing
horseshoes at the camp on Freeman Lake. We will remember him as a loving,
kind, genuine, smart and generous man, so much “like a father”
to those who were close to him. Often considered a serious man, we will
miss his bright, playful and sensitive nature. A loyal partner, loving
husband and supportive father, compassionate brother and faithful friend,
he will be deeply missed by his wife, Laurenda; daughter, Christina
(Shawn); son, Mike (Krista); and granddaughter, Mikayla; his sisters,
Barbara, Sharon and Marda; nieces and nephews; and all those friends
whose lives he touched. He is already especially missed by his devoted
pals Meggie and Charli. Visitation for family and friends will be 7
– 9 p.m. Thursday in Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater.
Funeral mass 2 p.m. Friday in St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church,
Bridgewater. Rev. Patrick Morris officiating. In lieu of flowers donations
may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, Canadian
Cancer Society or charity of choice. On line condolences may be made
