Joan M. Bardon-Downie (Short)
Of
Chester NS, suddenly at the South Shore Regional Hospital in Bridgewater
on January 2, 2009. Born in St. John's, Newfoundland, she was the daughter
of the late Dr. Edwin J. and Winifred (Parsons) Short. Joan attended Bishop
Spencer College in St. John's and graduated from Mount Allision University
in Sackville, New Brunswick in 1955. Joan's first career was as a Registered
Nurse, graduate of the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax in 1956. She
then embarked on a very successful career as a realtor. She loved working
with her clients and helping them fulfill their dream of "home".
Joan was a very active member of her community; she participated on many
boards and committees in both Bridgewater and Chester. Joan had recently
enjoyed another entrepreneurial venture with her "Antiques &
Collectibles". Much to her heartbreak, Joan was predeceased by her
husband Robert W. Downie. Both avid sailors and proud of their membership
and community at the Chester Yacht Club, they could always be found on
or near the waters of the South Shore. A consummate host, Joan shared
her love of food with their many friends. She and Bob entertained often.
She is deeply missed by her children, Janet Bardon (Paul Healy), Halifax,
Stephen Bardon, Toronto and Samuel Bardon (Greg Atkins), Toronto, and
her sister Ruth Canessa, Hyannis Port, MA, and her grandchildren Owen
and Isobel Bardon, Halifax. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements are
under the direction of Sweeny's Funeral Home, Bridgewater, where visitation
will be held on Friday January 9, 2009 from 2-4 p.m. In lieu of flowers,
memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice. Online condolences
may be made by visiting www.sweenysfuneralhome.com.
