William Layton Carey
90,
Bridgewater, Lunenburg Co., died Sunday, September 19, 2010 in Hillside
Pines Nursing Home, Bridgewater of natural causes. Bill was born, October
17, 1919 in Fox River to Charles and Eva Maude (Parsons) Carey. Bill grew
up in Aylesford and married Alta (Kinsman), July 26, 1949 in Woodville
and recently celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary. In 1938, Bill
joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Regina, Sask. He had a long
and distinguished career with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, with
postings all across Canada. The majority of his service was at Eskimo
Point, Coppermine, Aklavik and Baker Lake in the Northwest Territories.
He retired as a Sergeant in Virden, Manitoba. After his retirement from
the RCMP in 1961, Bill and his family retired to Bridgewater, where he
started the Co-Operators Insurance Agency in the basement of his home.
He grew the business for 23 years and was joined by his son Danny in 1978.
Bill was extremely proud that his business has expanded into three generations
and will celebrate its fiftieth year in January. Bill was an avid outdoorsman.
He loved hunting and fishing at his camp in Cannan Mountain and Peter
Stillwater or where ever he and friends would go. He was a long time member
of the Bridgewater Hand Gun Club and had a “reserved” seat at the card
table as it was one of his favorite pastimes to play cards with his friends.
He also loved woodworking and it was often said that anything he made
would never blow away ! Above all else, Bill (Dad, Grampy) loved being
with his family. His favorite time of year was Christmas when he could
spoil them by following his rule: one special gift to be opened on Christmas
Eve. He treasured every special occasion and anxiously waited with his
“boots on” for Danny to pick him up for the daily trip for coffee. Bill
is survived by his wife, Alta (Kinsman); sons, David (Denise), Danny (Rhona);
